ICC PROJECT – PSB, IPQ AND JPP Qualified to USIM

On 25 – 26 February 2015, the Quality Management Institute (IPQ) has organised a University Level Innovative and Creative Circles Mini Convention at Seminar Hall A, Convention Complex of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

The ICC Mini Convention was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Hassan Ali. During the opening speech, he urged all staff at UUM to make innovation as a culture. He also pointed out that UUM’s merit highly depends on the innovation and creativity of Centres of Authority (PTJ) in meeting the needs of stakeholders. "I expect all Heads of Centres of Authority to create their own ICC teams as the future of UUM depends on the efficiency of the delivery system", he said. He added that the ICC is one of the best platforms for Centres of Authority to improve the efficiency of the delivery system.

A total of 14 groups from various Centres of Authority have participated in this University Level ICC Mini Convention. There were two categories contested this year; Management category (12 groups) and Technical category (2 groups).

The main purpose of this ICC Mini Convention held is to tap into the ideas of design and innovation amongst staff of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and make them creative and yield their creativity by adopting ideas in functional systems or products to improve efficiency and effectiveness in training activities.

The closing ceremony of the ICC Mini Convention was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim. In his speech, he congratulated all groups contested and anticipated UUM to continue to innovate because failure to do so will lead to debacle. He also gave an example of a multinational company, Kodak, which went bankrupt because of its failure to innovate. The ICC Mini Convention which lasted for 2 days, ended with the prize giving ceremony to the winners of the three categories contested; University Level ICC Mini Convention, University Level Evaluation of Quality Environment Practices (5S/QE) and University 5S Logo competition.

As for ICC Mini Convention category, Smarty team from Sultanah Bahiyah Library (PSB) emerged as the champion and took home a cash prize of RM5000 and certificates. Energetic team from Institute of Quality Management (IPQ) was the runner-up and received a cash prize of RM 3,000 and certificates. Whereas the G-10 group from Development and Maintenance Department (JPP) won the third place and took home a cash prize of RM 2000 and certificates.

The Best Facilitator Award went to Miss Hanie Azyyati Abdul Jamil from Sultanah Bahiyah Library, the Best Innovation Award went to the Development and Maintenance Department and the Best Presentation Award went to the Culture and Arts Centre UUM. Each team took home a cash prize of RM300 and certificates.

While for the Evaluation of Quality Environment Practices (5S/QE), there were 3 Department categories contested; Department A, Department B, Schools and the Student Accommodation Centre (DPP). As for Department A category, Sultanah Bahiyah Library (PSB) became the Champion and received a cash prize of RM 3,000 and certificates; UUM Press secured the second place and took home a cash prize of RM 2,500 and certificates. While the University Health Centre (PKU) won the third place and received a cash prize of RM 2000 and certificates.

As for Department B category, Culture and Art Centre became the Champion and received a cash prize of RM 2500 and certificates; Institute of Quality Management (IPQ) secured the second place and took home a cash prize of RM 2000 and certificates. Whereas Institute of development and Entrepreneurship won the third place and received a cash prize of RM 1500 and certificates.

As for Schools category, Assistant Vice-Chancellor Office of UUM COB became the Champion, School of Business Management secured the second place and Centre for Technology Management and Logistics won the third place. As for Student Accommodation Centre (DPP) category, DPP Sime Darby became the Champion and received a cash prize of RM 2000 and certificates; DPP Maybank secured the second place and took home a cash prize of RM1500 and certificates. While DPP Bank Rakyat won the third place and received a cash prize of RM 1000 and certificates. The overall award for the Evaluation of Quality Environment Practices (5S/QE) was won by the Culture and Art Centre (PBS).

Finally, for University 5S Logo competition, the first and second places were won by UUM staff from Computer Centre, Mr Mohamad Ridzwan Azizan and Ms Siti Fatimah Yusof who took home a cash prize of RM300 and RM200 respectively. While the third place went to UUM student, Miss Halimaton Mazlan who received a cash prize of RM100.
