The Institute of Quality Management (IPQ) for the first time has launched UUM Acculturation Quality 2017 on 3 May 2017 at the foyer of the Sultanah Bahiyah Library. This event was to increase UUM’s community awareness on the importance of acculturation of quality in their daily activities. The  ceremony included a variety of programs related to quality practices in UUM such as 5S, Innovative and Creative Group (KIK) and Quality Management System (ISO).

The ceremony was officiated by UUM COB Assistant Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Yusnidah Ibrahim who represented the Vice-Chancellor. In her opening speech, Prof. Dr. Yusnidar said the launch is a symbolic gesture of IPQ’s efforts to strengthen and maintain the acculturation of quality for excellent working environment among the campus community while preserving the 5S approach which has been introduced since 2003.

“The implementation of 5S is the basic principle needed to produce a quality work culture and productivity in order to compete in an increasingly challenging world at the moment.”

“As suggested by the pioneers of 5S practices in Japan namely Mr. Osada and Mr. Hirano, some of  the 5S elements that can be adopted by organisations are  to provide a good working environment, clean, comfortable, organised and manageable, ethical, responsible and confident to all employees and customers, "she said.

She also added that excellent quality working culture must be performed through cooperation of all levels in UUM regardless of rank or rank within an organisation and hope it brings large-scale impact and more significant to the excellence of UUM.

Meanwhile, the Director of IPQ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faudziah Zainal Abidin said the acculturation of quality is very relevant and significant in ensuring that UUM campus community to optimize the creative and innovative elements in order to enter high - income developed economy country in tandem with the government’s intention in implementing the Employees Transformation surge.

"The Implementation of 5S is the best beginning for shaping the attitudes towards acculturation of quality in our lives. As such, IPQ will continue to be the main or stop centre to realize the 5S practices in campus".

"Along with this noble goal, IPQ will email  “EVERY THURSDAY IS 5S DAY " announcement  in which each PTJ is encouraged to implement 5S practices every Thursday starting from May 4, 2017.

IPQ and UUM Health Center (PKU) will also introduce a number of programs with health elements as one of the KPI indicators for PKU for a healthy UUM community.

"In addition, various initiatives to maintain and preserve the flora and fauna in UUM will also be implemented. For a start UUM staff will be encouraged to practice reduce and recycle every Thursday, and to propose to each PTJ to reduce the use of paper, water, electricity and plastic," she explained.

A prize presentation ceremony for the 5S Evaluation Practice of Quality Environment Competition  2016 was also held during the event. Among the categories in the competition included Departmental Category, School, Student Halls of Residence and Lecturer’s Room. The overall champion for the competition was PBS bringing home with them RM1, 500 cash and a trophy.

The prizes were presented by the Assistant Vice-Chancellor, UUM COB Prof. Dr. Yusnidah Ibrahim. Also present were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bashawir Ahmad Abdul Ghani, Head of Departments, Senior Officials of UUM and UUM campus community.

The event was concluded with an aerobic session led by Aerobic Crew from UiTM Arau.
